Online Sanghas

Postby anka on Sun Mar 19, 2017 11:42 pm

My partner and I have decided to move closer to home. Our parents are not getting any younger and we would like to be closer to spend more time with them and help where needed.

As a result of this I will be to far away to make a sangha meeting each week. I have been looking into online sanghas to participate it (live streaming practices) but have not found anything promising yet.

Do any of you know of or run such an online sangha community?

Hi JF,

Taking care of your parents is Bodhisattva Work. A lesson in giving, kindness, love, patience (sometimes a lot of each) and many other positive emotions.

I am not sure if you are a Shikantaza practictioner, but our Treeleaf Soto Sangha is available.

Treeleaf Zendo was designed specifically as an online practice place for Zen practitioners who cannot easily commute to a Zen Center due to health concerns, living in remote areas, or work, childcare and family needs, and seeks to provide netcast Zazen sittings, retreats, Jukai, discussion, interaction with a teacher, and all other activities of a Zen Buddhist Sangha, all fully online and without charge.

But, really, we are a Sangha just about like any Sangha, and the place feels like a small, intimate group of people who sit together and support each other in practice. That is the way it should be.

The focus is Shikantaza "Just Sitting" Zazen as instructed by the 13th Century Japanese Master, Eihei Dogen.

Come have a look if you think so ...

and

http://www.treeleaf.org/forums/forumdis ... MORE-ZAZEN!

I am not sure how promising our place is. In fact, we promise nothing. :PP:

Hi Jundo,

Thank you for your response. Treeleaf is the most promising of the groups I have seen thus far. I am on the east coast of the United States so the meeting time is a little late for me (normally sleeping by 9 to 10pm). Perhaps I can learn to fall asleep on the cushion. It seems zen west falls in the same time slot also.

If I can not find anything at a better time for the east coast I will likely join you in your monthly session that starts earlier(8pm my time).

Hi Anka,

It may take a little getting used to, but I tell folks to drop mental categories such as 'here, there, now and then' with our Sangha, forgetting time and place (an important skill for Zen folks). Our weekly Zazenkai are all recorded in live 'real time', so that they are available to join any place and any time you can, in whatever time Zone. All is just the same apart from the state of mind. :)

We also have some more informal sittings during the week at various times, and there is a schedule of those you can look at. If you want a sample, this is what one of our Zazenkai looks like (this is 90 minutes, and we have a 4 hour Zazenkai once a month):

It is really very simple. Just bring your cushion, Chant and Sit along.

Hi, Anka. Kwan Um School of Zen also has an online sangha. I believe it streams some practices from the east coast. You can check it out at http://www.kwanumzen.org/online/. It is in a Linchi tradition, not Soto. Good luck! Judy
