Visitor-welcoming Zen monasteries in Japan

Visitor-welcoming Zen monasteries in Japan

Postby Oriol on Sat Apr 16, 2016 7:01 pm

Hey,

I have made plans to travel for 3 weeks in Japan this month and I was wondering if there are any Zen monasteries in the country that welcome visitors for short stays. Alternatively, if you have suggestions for Zen-related activities it would be great to know more about. I am considering a short pilgrimage otherwise.

Warm greetings,

Good morning Oriol,

here're some lists of monasteries in Japan who will accept foreigners for a shorter time period:
- http://iriz.hanazono.ac.jp/zen_centers/centers_data/japan.htm

Shoganji (https://zenretreat.com/) seems like a calm and less strict place. Sogenji (http://onedropzen.org/community/japan/sogenji) - led by famous Shodo Harada Roshi - is also a good place for us "foreigners" to stay - but I'm not sure about short-term stays though.

I'd advise you to contact one of those monasteries - most of them use email - and ask them about a short-term stay.

Best wishes,
Robert
