10-day intensive chan retreat at ddrc (NY)

Postby Guo Gu on Tue Oct 20, 2015 4:27 am

hi everyone,

i'll be leading a 10-day intensive huatou/gong'an retreat from december 26 (2015) to january 3 (2016) at ddrc. apparently an anonymous donor gave us a chunk of money for scholarship for approximately 10 or more retreatants. the scholarship will go to those in need and have a regular practice. this is an intensive retreat so beginner's should do a shorter retreat first before applying. last year ddrc accepted way too many ppl (about 100 ppl) for the retreat--many of them beginners--so the teaching couldn't go more in depth. ddrc makes the decisions about acceptance/denial of applicants--i have little say in this. but a committee of my students here in tallahassee does decide on the scholarship money. if you're interested, apply to the retreat via ddrc's website, if ddrc accepts you, and you're one of those who needs scholarship, then ddrc will notify us. it seems that most ppl like silent illumination method better than huatou/gong'an methods, so hopefully we'll have fewer ppl on this retreat.

more info about the retreat here: http://www.dharmadrumretreat.org/activi ... 015-HT-Dec

if you want to know what huatou (critical phrase) or gong'an (public case) method is, you can listen to my introductory talk of this method here: http://www.tallahasseechan.com/talks.html (scroll down midway to 4/7/12)

Guo Gu,
Just to say, I'm grateful that you, via a donor, can offer this. It's not for me this time, but it is a rare gift for those who need it. For years, I cooked my way. I'm also grateful for friends who have helped me along my way. For those in need, this opens doors that would otherwise be closed.

be well my friend, until we meet again :Namaste:

Wishing a strong retreat to everyone so fortunate to attend.

Ten days is a good long stretch, too.

Guo Gu, thanks for posting the photo from the retreat.

I see one of our ZFI regulars!, Jessica. What a smile!, Jessica!, I hope it was a wonderful retreat, and that practice continues well.

Guo Gu, I'm not sure if I see anyone else I know, or remember. But is that Oswald, in front of the Buddha, right on the Buddha's center-line, behind you? Also, maybe Laura, from Mar de Jade, Mexico, at front left? I'm looking for "Leopold" (front row, toward left?): I hope she's well. And "Stella", who was very kind to me on one of the early retreats at DDRC.

I haven't seen everybody in 15 years... .

I think I see Guo Gu. ;)

Great to see the Chan Hall so beautifully finished, now. The work of many hands.

:Namaste:

Retreat was beautiful :) . If I tried to explain its awesomeness it would be a disservice.

Many bows to Guo Gu and all my fellow retreatants.

joe,
the retreat was memorable. but all the folks you named are not in this retreat.... photos can be deceiving. estelle is doing well in sarasota--she retired there many yrs ago and seldom travels. she, however, has her own little (private) zendo there. i led a short retreat there and it was wonderful. dedicated small grp of ppl and the zendo is a block from the beach. the morning period of meditation is held there! haebn't seen laura in years... maybe on the taiwan pilgrimage trip. oswald is missing in action. don't know where he is.
see you on the next retreat? :)
