Chant while shaving the head

Postby LolloRosso on Tue Mar 21, 2017 12:58 am

Hello everybody,
I am trying to find out if there is a Buddhist (or even Zen specific) chant for shaving ones head please?
My google searches to date have been disappointing. It appears google does indeed not have all the answers. I was hoping somebody in the forum (maybe with monastic experience) might have some insights.

Much obliged,
Fiona

Search for teihatsu ge or teihatsu no ge, for example:

Thank you so much Meido - I really appreciate your help!

"In shaving off beard and hair,
we pray that all living beings
should forever be free from mental afflictions
and in the end attain nirvana.

teijo shuhatsu  剃除鬚髮
to gan shujō  當願衆生
yōri bon no 永離煩惱
kugyō jakumetsu  究竟寂滅"

What a wonderfully compassionate way to go about personal grooming!

Just don't use the other teihatsu verse, or you'll be conducting your own Soto funeral :)

Hi,

If you would like to see a part of the shaving ritual, 39:10 here. Of course, a bit different on one's own.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhTe8Aiz1s4

There are two interesting special rules about this. One is that both the person shaving and the one being shaved should reflect on the verse rather than recite it during the actual shaving (or perhaps recite before the actual shaving). I have seen it done during the shaving though, but I think before or reflection is better. I suppose the reason is that all that jaw moving and trying to do two things at once might result in a few nicks! ;)

After the ceremony, hair (and clipped nails too) are buried in the ground at the base of a plant or in a hair reliquary where people won't step on them. Rather than just tossing the hair and clippings in the trash. Kinda like a hair funeral

Of course, your Lineage might have their own ways, so best to ask your Teacher

PS - Also, I hope you use a better and sharper razor than that fellow was using in the film! That looks deadly, and the funeral might result by accident! :PP:
