My wife, a 4th Dan Blackbelt in Aikido here in Japan, informs me that the general consensus throughout most of the Aikido world in Japan these days that the images of folks flying across the room at the light touch -- or no touch at a distance -- of the master is most likely a combination of politeness and respect of the student/uke for the teacher, showmanship and self-psyche. I have personally experienced masters who are able to concentrate a great amount of power and momentum in a small gesture. However, much is also not more than a good performance I believe ... especially the fellows who do so at a distance removed.

When I was a student in China 30 years ago, I was very interested in this subject too and the "wonders" of Chinese martial arts. Much rumor and myth surrounds these things, but very often little substance and some slight of hand when one looks closely.

Martial arts is like the vitamin D
Its in your blood. You take it from the sun light.Learning it from a master is like taking it from a drug.

deep note - What I like in Zen is you can liken or simulate anything to anything. :)
