In and around a koan, one does not ask others to expound the Dharma.

What does the koan open-up to you, and what do you open-up to? It's more like thatta way.

But one must be with a teacher for this magic to work. Otherwise it's all "reading", and guesswork. Time's a-wasting!

You say "expand", but you may mean "expound". It's hard to guess what you may mean. You'll just have to write it correctly, or say that you already have.

We are here to discuss, by the way, and not to expound Dharma. To hear Dharma expounded, go to your local Buddhist center. It is expounded by teachers. Or, ask teachers here where to start in order to receive correct teaching on Dharma basics. A forum thread about a Zen Buddhist koan is not the place to do it, because it would be off-topic.

Welcome!

sincerely,

Bokki - Welcome here :heya:

The foundation of Chan/Zen who use koans as a training tool is zazen (sitting meditation)

Are you aware of this?

Kwan Um has particular way of dealing with kong an's. It's not special, just different, geared toward lay folks. I don't feel like explaining it here, the internet being the internet. The practice has been helpful to me. If you are truly interested, pm me, or ask in the Teacher section. Zen Master Judy Roitman, a Kwan Um person, may answer your question. My own sense is that it is a complicated subject, best dealt with in person, if at all possible. :peace:

I received a pm about this, so maybe it's just best to have one of my teachers explain it:

About Kong an Practice - Zen Master Dae Kwang

For the record, I am not interested in debating the merits, or perceived lack of merits, of this style of practice. It is posted for those that are curious.

Why make "before" and "after"?

My own view is that Zen doesn't concern itself with before and after.

Just now, how is it?

Maybe enlightenment is like that. We have to find out for ourselves. :peace:
