Slow and gradual is the way to go. Sounds like that's what you're doing, Victor.
There's an old (March 1987) article from Yoga Journal called "How to Grow a Lotus" that's made the rounds for years. It shows stretches useful for seated meditation. Some folks have found it helpful, here's a link to that issue. The article starts on p. 44:
Hi C., without knowing/seeing your specific conditions of course, it's difficult to say. But in general I would urge anyone who is able to spend more time sitting on the floor during the day, rather than in chairs. Make the ground your friend.
Beyond that, stretches or exercises which open the hips and release the low back will always be useful I think. As Michael noticed, we have seen that exercises which aim at developing outer muscle "armoring" (e.g. situps) or stress the isolation and repeated contraction of muscles (e.g. bodybuilding) will cause difficulty. If one exercises, much better to do something stressing functional, integrated whole-body movement: dance, yoga, some martial arts, etc.
Or, just do what Buddha did and some yogis still do: eat little, sit a lot, and walk everywhere

Very helpful article, I see now that the issue is mostly due to hips tightness.
I will start to practice that yoga sequence and see whether it will be of help with time.
