When we lived in Hong Kong in the 80's & 90's we used to have a large parrot called Gabriel. We occasionally let him fly round the garden. He loved to attack men!...But never women. Probably had a bad early experience with a man.

Thanks, Larry, that evokes quite a vivid image. Hmm, and perhaps explains something: maybe my ex- was a parrot in a past life! :tongueincheek:

I know that parrots can live pretty long lives. Did you have to leave Gabriel-the-parrot behind when you moved from Hong Kong? Or did he fly away one time while cavorting in the garden? Or maybe old-age got him. Just curious... .

"Alex", the Mexican Grey Parrot was taught to talk and distinguish colors and materials, etc., by Irene Pepperberg, a former professor of comparative psychology here at The University of Arizona. Alex lived to age 31 (other varieties can live longer).

There may be some videos on YouTube of Pepperberg and the bird at work in their researches. I liked the way he said "wood" (heard him in a documentary film aired on TV years ago).

Here's a piece from a local paper about Alex's passing in 2007 at age 31:

And, a NEW YORK TIMES article on same:

(sorry, all; Off-topic I think).

He never flew away. He loved us. Or, to borrow Spike's perspective, the food we gave him :)
We gave him to a neighbour when we left. That was in 95. He's probably long gone now. Hope he didn't expire somewhere over the Himalayas, looking for England

Comforting to know. Thank you! --Joe

ps here's a brief video piece introduced by Neil deGrasse Tyson about Alex and Dr. Pepperberg.

Alex reminds me of Hitler's talking dogs :)

They led to such classic British newspaper headlines as "Heel Hitler", "Furred Reich" & "Woofen SS" :lol2:

Churchill's most famous bulldog was "Dodo" who he bought at the age of 17 by selling his bicycle. I can't find any mention of "Cheekers". Maybe you're confusing him with Chequers, the country home of all British Prime Ministers.
Churchill also had a parrot, "Charlie", who he taught to swear obscenities against Hitler :lol2:

org'l, Enver,

Maybe just a minor point, see what you think.

HERE IS MY ENLIGHTENMENT PERSPECTIVE OR DEFINITION;

Awakening and the Buddhamind is "just" being awake to all our original Human inheritances
(having un-covered them, and having them uncovered), and being able to use them freely.

There is no "enlightenment" (that word is from faulty translation to English, made a few
centuries ago). Awakening yes; enlightenment no. The Buddha said he is "awake".

Sorry, this does not address the question about "love" at all (we've already touched on that).

Yessir.

The Buddha said he is "awake".

Continuing to say "enlightened" is just a 250 year-old bad habit, with too many (unfortunately rather ignorant) supporters and boosters pushing it along. It's not our fault. Time to wake up... .

Love,

The bird that lived near our house would routinely attack my wife when she walked by. Not me. Something personal going on there.

After all these years my husband continues to veto music that I enjoy listening to -- unless its music he also enjoys listening to- I see that I don't know why- I'd prefer to be attacked by a small bird, instead-

Hi bokki

Can your avatar discuss religion & write poetry?
Or maybe track down Fuki?
Or chase his cats?
Or chase away vicious birds? :lol2:
