Did the Buddha have a sense of humor?

Postby Slothrop on Thu Mar 19, 2009 8:26 pm

Did he like to joke around? There are a few suttas where I think he's trying to be funny and I do chuckle to myself thinking that he is indeed a humorous guy. What do you guys think?

Some of the old Tibetan lamas I've been around were really funny people. They laughed all the time and had such a joy for life. I would like to think Shakyamuni was the same. :)

The Zen and Chan teachers I have known have also laughed a lot, and their dharma talks are often quite funny.

One of my favorite stories comes from Pema Chodron, regarding Chogyam Trungpa. Chogyam was sitting with his teacher quietly outside in a meadow, near a monastery. They were sitting there together for hours, just enjoying the silence. Then at one point, Chogyam says to his teacher, with a chuckle, "They call that a tree." They both erupted into laughter.

I saw the Dalai Lama when he was at Shoreline teaching the Heart Sutra. He would talk for quite a while, seemed like ten minutes, then the translator would talk quite a while too. The translator had a very calm, soothing type voice. At one point, after a vaguely funny story, we watched the Dalai Lama clearly scolding his translator in Tibetan. The translator then looked at all of us (thousands) and said in a sheepish voice "His Holiness has requested that I be more... humorous."

On the Grey Forum this questiion was raised and the thread that followed had some pretty good examples of humor used by the Buddha and some rather pointed opposition to the idea that the Buddha would employ any sort of humor in any instance, which is to say the thread got rather un-funny rather quickly, but it does contain enough examples that are worth looking at:

That is the Pali suttas. In the much later Mahayana texts, the one sutra that comes to mind that has a fair amount of humor is the Vimalakirti.

Tilt has a sense of humour, even if he spells it incorrectly.

There are a few funny suttas, such as a good translation of the Brahma-nimantana Sutta.

Buddha was as funny as Socrates in places, I'd say, yes.

He probably was of good humor too before he began his Yoga and awakened.

While practicing, I think he was probably rather grim: After all, he did not have Buddhist methods to use. ;)

Did the Buddha have a sense of humor?

:tee:
Sure. Remember when he almost starved himself to death. :lool:
Remember when he left a perfectly good life, wife, palace and baby just for a selfish spiritual prank.

How about when he allegedly lifted a flower to start zendom, or walked down the road thinking he was awake. Wot a jester! Clown Buddha. What a comedian!

What about making all those gullibles wear a uniform and cut off their hairiness. :lool:

I think his humour mellowed with age. He would probably have made a good straight man ... :hide:

The Buddha was not reknowned for his dance moves, jovial after dinner speeches or worldly life style. He was a professional hobo, yogi and cult head.

Personally I enjoy all his jokes. He reminds me of Stewart Lee.

ZFI,

A few things that we can be sure of about the Buddha, even 25 centuries after:

First, he was no good at stand-up comedy: he SAT.

Second, he had not yet initiated Zen Buddhism until he held up the flower and Mahakasyapa smiled. So, for a while in his career as Buddha he did not have the humor of "Zen".

I mention this latter bit because the modern German-American Buddhist scholar Edward Conze (1904-1979) wrote that:

    "Zen is Buddhism with jokes".
