Who would you rather have a beer with?

Postby TonyD on Mon Jan 04, 2016 3:13 pm

Happy 2016,

Fun question (or maybe not). Let's say you could resurrect one of the following Japanese Buddhist masters from their ashes for a few hours: Dogen, Hakuin, Nichiren, or Shinran. Who would you rather have a beer with? What would you talk about (if anything)?

Or suggest another deceased master, if you find someone else more interesting.

(Teetotalers may substitute tea for beer.)

I wouldn't resurrect anybody :lol2:

let the dead be dead and focus on the living.

Probably mainly because I'd have too much problems with translating :PP:

Have fun :daisy:

Actually considering it I would have a chat with Jesus or the original Buddha to see what was really their teaching and what was made up bahooey from the people after them.

I doubt you'd be able to have a proper conversation with them though because of the huge cultural difference there would be.

I'll have a beer with Tony D - mine's a pint of Heady Topper.

PS - I hung out with a Buddha (or at least a Boddhisattva) for years on end; I only remember him saying mindblowing stuff about once every 10 years - either I underestimated the rest of the stuff he said, or I wasn't worth mindblowing most of the time.

I'd drink with Lalla (Lalleshwari)

I searched for my Self
until I grew weary,

but no one, I know now,
reaches the hidden knowledge
by means of effort.

Then, absorbed in "Thou art This,"
I found the place of Wine.

There all the jars are filled,
but no one is left to drink.

Tea!

But I'd need a HUGE flask...to nip in and out of Zen historical EVENTS rather than just meeting individuals.

From that week Yaeko Iwasaki wrote about in her letters to Sogaku Harada Roshi, right back to the gatha competition...

A Zen tourist and groupie lol

Sparkle,

Yes, those letters.

Master Sheng Yen once asked a group of us assembled at the Ch'an Center if we had read Kapleau's book, and read Yaeko's letters. Of course most of us had. He asked if anyone thought that the experience Yaeko related was in fact particularly deep, and asked us to comment. Responses varied. Sheng Yen closed the topic by saying,

"That's just the beginning".

The book was a lucky find for me, back when, and I hope is lucky for many people, always.

Very interesting!

When I first read anout her I wouldn't have had an informed opinion one way or the other without Harada's comments, but...

I do remember something causing me to briefly think that the teacher may have been making more of her experiences than was correct...I was at that time still in my ÜBER- SUSPICIOUS/SCEPTICAL stage where I was still questioning the validity of Zen/The Dharma.
Not now.

Now, to hear someone report what you have above...well :<.<:
Nothing to say.

Thanks all. I should have mentioned that I would probably pick Shinran. I might not learn that much about Buddhism from him (or would I?) but I suspect he might be the most fun to talk to.

Dogen! And I would pour his beer until it flowed over the top of the glass just to see what he said.
