Dogen seems a little too grim. Hakuin was definitely the guy to have a beer with.

The old-timers were monastics, and had taken the vow of "not indulging in the wine of delusion". You might have Tea with them, instead. So might I.

Hotei seems like he would have been a fun guy to share some tea with.

...and likely a deep dish pizza.

The results we read of Mr Dōgen putting brush to washi, are his efforts at putting forward the... Un-putforwardable?

A very serious matter indeed.

He is hardly at his most relaxed. You get him down the boozer... Couple of games of pool, I reckon he might surprise you all! :lol2:

A beer or two with Fr Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, SJ French paleontologist who wrote a lot of modern stuff I like.
In the 1920's he dug around Chine for bones and tools and found pre Neanderthal men, in the Ordos desert west of the Great Wall. A great plateau in Inner Mongolia. Seeing this early people adpting to this great open vastness, and finding human remains and ancient tool wrote: "The immense hazard and immense blindness of the world are only illusions."

..and later in life,

"Throughout my whole life, during every minute of it,
the world has been gradually lighting up and blazing before my eyes until it has come to surround me,
entirely lit up from within."

...refreshed by Annie Dillard's FOR THE TIME BEING.

Not indulging in the wine of delusion means more like not indulging into gossip to me (drunk with ignorance)
then the actual fluids we drink :PP:

Fun question (or maybe not). Let's say you could resurrect one of the following Japanese Buddhist masters from their ashes for a few hours: Dogen, Hakuin, Nichiren, or Shinran. Who would you rather have a beer with? What would you talk about (if anything)?

Or suggest another deceased master, if you find someone else more interesting.

(Teetotalers may substitute tea for beer.)

The Layman, without a doubt.

I also would like to have a beer with the ZM Seung Sahn, the founder of the tradition I practice in. I am one of an increasing number of Kwan Um students that never met him. I meet him all the time, when I see my teacher, but I suppose that's a little different. And, I have a sneaking suspicion that if I offered him a beer (or better yet, a little soju!), he would join me. :)

well, I haven't seen any old-timers lately.... only drunken roshis. It's easier to see who is drunk with ignorance. I am so sick and tired of correlating behavior with ideas of rightousness. It's a deep subject... you can easily see it from the bottom of the well.

With such a contingent of cherished undiscovered guzzlers, I think I'd better cart-along a few bottles of something, too, and not just show up thirsty: "It's the compassionate thing to do". Teachers welcome, also!

If it must be a tea-party, that's great, too. The thing to do is to be there. The thing to be is to do it.

The American humorist Ambrose Bierce defined, in his The Devil's Dictionary, c. 1910,...

Teetotaler, n. One who abstains from strong drink, sometimes totally, sometimes tolerably totally.
