The Mystic Principle, Part 3

In the abode of consciousness,
The higher soul, the solar soul, is the “girl”;
In the abode of vitality,
The lower soul, the lunar soul, is the “boy”.

There is a long talk I wrote on the Hun and Po by that title. In my own initial entry, I had no ideas relative to the the traditional Chinese folk-religious aspects of the hun and po “souls”. Due to the abstract device of the Clear Serenity Branch of the Northern School of Complete Reality Taoism as transmitted through the bulk of Thomas Cleary’s volumes, I just held the “higher solar soul” to be associated with clarity; the girl, trigrams Fire and Heaven, fire, spirit, mind, conscious knowledge and its conditioned aspect as temperament which rises: Yang. The “lower lunar soul” is associated with opacity; the boy, trigrams Water and Earth, water, vitality, body, real knowledge and its conditioned aspect as emotion, which sinks: Yin.

These are the basic elements and characteristics of the two things. In terms of the medicines to be refined and fused in the alchemical process, these are primarily Fire (the girl derived from Heaven) and Water (the boy derived from Earth). Confused? That’s a good sign. Just become (eventually) familiar with the terminology in its own meaningless context and start juggling. Starting with one, add another into the mix according to the time without dropping anything. Don’t be in a hurry and don’t lose your concentration. This is the device. It isn't a matter of doing, and it isn't a matter of belief; it is a matter of awareness …for no reason at all, enter into it 24 hours a day.

Eventually, as a matter of course, the meaningless crowds out the meaningful, and Virtue has its place to alight; therefore the Way is beckoned by emptiness. Eventually, the meaningless, in turn, acquiesces to the Way of reality's mode of selfless response.

It is necessary for most people (such as myself) to take MANY years to manifest and maintain a permeable psychology in one’s own culturally conditioned mindset (without succumbing to the shallow tendency relative to the clinging nature to trade in one’s seemingly old-fashioned western lifestyle baggage for the seemingly exotic eastern lifestyle baggage) in order to become familiar with and penetrate the cultural milieu within which this ancient teaching tradition had its effect, in order to begin to absorb the effect of its teaching. IT CAN NEVER BE UNDERSTOOD. It is not only a system of conceptual organization for the purpose of general psychic sanitation and specific operations designed to refine the conditioned nature of the human mentality, IT IS A DEVICE UNTO ITSELF. It has its own purpose and its own time.

There is no thing. One cannot cling to this device. It is a function of knowledge itself.

Esssentially, it’s a trick. There’s nothing to get. If you don’t get it, yet somehow pass through the gateless gate, there is a mystical penetration. If you get it, something went wrong, because there is nothing to get. Don’t worry, just endeavor to forget whatever you have ever learned or known to be true, and stop going along with psychological momentum. Life is short, don’t waste it.

In order to penetrate and begin to absorb the embedded knowledge of the device, it is necessary to dispense with arbitrary personalistic philosophies and patterns of intellectual and emotional self-reification.

In other words, one must approach a limpid clarity of objectivity. To put it another way, one must cultivate the innate open sincerity one was born with before one became acculturated by and subject to one’s inherited and indoctrinated views. There is nothing wrong with formative moralities, yet it is necessary to clarify the basis from within our conditioned premise and start all over from nothing whatsoever. This is the real.

It’s not called being “reborn” for nothing. But since we don’t rely on the quick and easy “faith healing” route around here, really learning to realize the innate effect of the mystic principle is what takes a long long time and requires much much subtle effort. It is not a process of breaking down the ego, and it’s not a matter of accepting something else into your life. It is a matter of dissolving ego’s rigidity of absolutism without any risk to its valid and practical worldly function.

Ego is not a thing. Ego does not validate the person, it is just the functionality of the psychological apparatus of the being that is going to die. The true self is unborn, nonoriginated, pure and complete— it’s already who you have always been since before your parents were born. Reality is an inconceivable premise, with no boundaries. It’s just now. The present instant itself is immortality. Why? There has never been another instance in or out of time. People who see their nature enter into the incipient perpetual result and abide here.

This is the meaning and reality behind presence. There is no coming or going, and no one knows the difference. If you know the difference, you know this no one. Knowing nonbeing is the point of sudden realization— it is the knowledge of no knowledge. There is inconceivable power in not-knowing.

It is not used on others, only through oneself by virtue of everyday ordinary situations. This is the mode of influence upon entry into the inconceivable.

Spiritual alchemy is a teaching device that unlocks one’s potential for activating and witnessing this fact in one’s present lifetime. After the achievement’s maturation in the aftermath of seeing one’s essence, one re-enters the marketplace, accepts one’s (enlightening) function, and shares oneself with open hands in the midst of delusion. One doesn’t change oneself in order to see reality; one stops going along with creation in order to see what already is.

The Mystic Principle, Part 4

*************************************************************
Now I reveal the device

Completely in one statement:

Body and mind are the fire and medicine [vitality and awareness];

When body and mind are settled,

The mystic teaching is mastered;

Vitality, energy, and spirit

Merge in open spontaneity.

In three hundred days,

The embryonic spirit is released;

Turning about,

One shatters cosmic space.

—from Li Daoqun’s The Book of Balance and Harmony, page 99

*********************************************************************************

If you thought settling body and mind to be simple, that would be correct.

It is simple, yet the reason it is so difficult is because of the momentum of psychological awareness. The reason accepting one’s current state without thinking good or bad is effective is because it bypasses every defense the mechanical human mentality has devised… except for its compulsive nature.

The mental compulsion gives birth to endless successions of thoughts that flow through preceding thoughts even before mental images have been recognized and subsequently followed unconsciously, consciously or forgotten consciously or unconsciously. Conditioning makes going along with the flow of chaos unawares the principle mode of delusional existence.

Endeavoring to see this flow is the primary and elementary goal of the mindfully observant meditative practice of quiet sitting. One who is unmoved while facing the flow of the conditioned conscious awareness in order to see it for what it is without forgetting one’s purpose fulfills the symbolism of the 28th hexagram Excess of the Great. It is a matter of complete sincerity, not willpower.

Open sincerity is the state of nonpsychological acceptance of what is, without thinking good or bad; but the compulsion to rehash psychological postures that simply don’t exist independently is very hard to eliminate. It is impossible to stop the human mentality’s compulsion by the human mentality’a (ego’s) will. One simply must make conscious subtle observation of the word-stream the number one task of entry-level self-refinement.

Why? Because the human mentality is quite self-conscious, and it cannot withstand the scrutiny of a constant subtle intent. If one can devise to set up an unbending intent to observe the human mentality 24 hours a day, the day will eventually come when the endless flow of words will dry up simply due to openly and sincerely observing the mind without thinking good or bad. When that happens, one may then begin to proceed to the next step of gradual self-refinement which is consciously accepting one’s current condition without thinking good or bad.

The reason why it is necessary to first recognize, then savvily subdue the compulsive mentality’s word-stream is because, while non-complaisant self-acceptance is all well and good, one is unable to rest in this undeveloped nonpsychological basis due to one’s concretized habituation to the flow of unconscious momentum by mental compulsions. This habituation must be gradually weakened without agitating ego’s errant designs by an infinitely patient and good-willed intent. When this is accomplished, ego’s deviance is restored to its basic, natural impersonal function, and the practice of subtle observation is then gradually shifted to finer and finer realms of self-delusion.

After a long time, body and mind will finally begin to settle, and one can then begin to recognize and observe the medicines of the elixir of immortality from a conscious posture of nonspychological observation resting in non-complaisant self-acceptance without thinking good or bad.

Basically one gradually refines the self by stopping and seeing. At first one sees and stops words by pure observation. Later one uses pure observation to refine the elixir. Stopping and seeing, seeing and stopping, according to the time. Though the work is essentially the same throughout the course of endless gradual refinement, the timing, gravity, and nature of the elements one is working with develops according to one’s personal evolutionary process over a long long time. Even after seeing your nature, the work continues unabated. Mastery of the firing process becomes an automatically mindful response to everyday ordinary situations by virtue of the depth of one’s subtle observation.

Merging in spontaneity is not just in three hundred days; the merging is perpetual. It is just one yin and one yang alternating forever. Immortality is watching this alternation, each one, comprising a change. Those who see Changing, do not go along with it and subsequently absorb its potential, by using subtle observation to release it from the matrix of creation.

When the author says, “the embryonic spirit is released; turning about, one shatters cosmic space”, he speaks of the major cycle and mystic vision of Absolute Change. Minor cycles are no different. The embryonic spirit is still one’s potential recognized, released and absorbed whether it is in terms of the absolute or in everyday ordinary situations.

Complete reality is talismanic— absolute or karmic, neither exist without the other. Only that which is the impersonal nonbeing seeing nature is the real. This is the true self, therefore what is seen as real is evidence of one’s virtuous (or not) accord in reality. Though one may see through creation, still, it is just what it is, in terms of the gradual. One just takes it up or lets it out, according to circumstances. Though there is no thing, the totality of potential in terms of any given situation must be freed grain by grain through selfless adaption in the midst of the “house on fire”. One cannot shirk one’s responsibilities to creation— otherwise, one is not on par with, nor a partner of, creative evolution— and one is then an ordinary worldling, subject to its changes

This is why I say that reality and delusion look the same. Virtuous absorption does not partake of the gross as a value judgement of grossness because reality, when it is is seen, is seen as potential, which is impersonal, therefore having no relative value subject to selfish judgements relative to self and other.

This is not only having knowledge, it is being able to act on that knowledge.

In working directly with essence, the more one assimilates with virtuous accord, the less that energy is wasted maintaining ego and the more energy potential one realizes as already stabilized immaterial aware nature. The mystic vision being pure awareness shattering cosmic space passes through the absolute into one’s continuing enlightening development in the aftermath of the sudden.

By virtue of seeing one’s everyday ordinary situations by the same mystic principle, there is the natural enlightening spiritual function of adepts having transcended all authentic teaching: it is not in words and cannot be understood by meaning. It has no tradition nor actuality of action relative to the person. One must go on beyond the zero point of the intent of the classics and dharma-talks of prior illuminates to enact its power by oneself no different than "East Mountain walking on water".

Even in oneself, this has never begun at a certain point in one’s life— it’s just how it has always been without knowing. The practical application of enlightening qualities is in discovering this for oneself for the first time.

In seeing once, one sees forever. By this virtuous accord, one enters the unfathomable Way without end.

Hello Deci Belle,
Shades of Dogen’s “sloughing off of mind and body.”

Knowing what you have to do is easy enough to grasp but doing it is another matter.

That’s dukkha.

It’s discovering the knack of letting thoughts go. Its not an act of will.

Be intensely alert but passively aware.

Without thinking anything at all!

I’m afraid that “shifting” is not allowed because no act of will is allowed.

After a long time, body and mind will finally begin to settle, and one can then begin to recognize and observe the medicines of the elixir of immortality from a conscious posture of nonspychological observation resting in non-complaisant self-acceptance without thinking good or bad.

One gets a glimpse of an extreme version of the common human goal – profound peace-of-mind – happiness.

One abstains from conscious mental activity.

Practice keeps you in touch .

When the author says, “the embryonic spirit is released; turning about, one shatters cosmic space”, he speaks of the major cycle and mystic vision of Absolute Change. Minor cycles are no different. The embryonic spirit is still one’s potential recognized, released and absorbWed whether it is in terms of the absolute or in everyday ordinary situations.

Is he talking about the void beyond bliss? That cool, bright , boundless …..nothing. That total dissociation of awareness from its normal functions. Not recommended! The great treasure of Zazen is access to happiness – in meditation n at first then, eventually, in our daily lives.

One cannot shirk one’s responsibilities to creation— otherwise, one is not on par with, nor a partner of, creative evolution— and one is then an ordinary worldling, subject to its changes

Most people nowadays do not know how to be happy. They don’t get their just and proper rewards for their successful actions.

This is why I say that reality and delusion look the same. Virtuous absorption does not partake of the gross as a value judgement of grossness because reality, when it is is seen, is seen as potential, which is impersonal, therefore having no relative value subject to selfish judgements relative to self and other.

The mystic vision being pure awareness shattering cosmic space passes through the absolute into one’s continuing enlightening development in the aftermath of the sudden.

Pure unadulterated awareness is the endpoint of successful meditaion.

Knowing theoretically and benefiting practically are two very different things. The former is easy the latter not so.

Even in oneself, this has never begun at a certain point in one’s life— it’s just how it has always been without knowing. The practical application of enlightening qualities is in discovering this for oneself for the first time

All creatures with our sort of central nervous system are aware. Few know how to take advantage of this.

In seeing once, one sees forever. By this virtuous accord, one enters the unfathomable Way without end.

Let’s hope there is a favourable end.

My post is not a criticism of yours. It is more an attempt to dig out the meaning hidden in your rather complicated presentation.

Best wishes

Yes Colin— wonderful of you to do so because your analysis and treatment give others a way to lend what I'm writing a context for each individual's own inner application! It is inconceivable, yet naturally arrived at and applied in everyday ordinary situations.

I only describe my own basis of subtle operation in reality. Your sincerity and insight could very well be appreciated by those who have such affinity to do so, and a vocabulary rooted in a particular teaching tradition. Responses to you specific points relative to my quotes is not suited to my mode of expression, though— when you see through to the basis yourself, doctrinal relativity has no value. My writing is not sync'd to any tradition, per se— as my words have the same basis as those written by all prior illuminates. And that is the important point to consider— not the relative definitions you have assigned and taken the time to clarify (as I neither agree nor disagree cuz didn't read them).

For me to add that as one’s subtle incremental passing through is not dependent on sudden enlightenment may seem incongruous, yet it is true. Just turn the light around in everyday ordinary situations. Sudden illumination is only evidence of one’s own unbegotten entry into the inconceivable. Inconceivability is just one’s own perpetually incipient presence where a trifle of a place such as cosmic space never having arisen is Mind’s selfless abiding, awake, unborn.

This means there is no reason to depend on appearances, nor consider appearances as the basis of rational action, because appearances and mind have no intrinsic connection, or relativity. Mind isn't psychological, and awareness isn't thoughts.

Through the virtuous function of seeing one’s everyday ordinary situations by the same mystic principle, there is the natural enlightening spiritual operation of adepts having transcended all authentic teaching: it is not in words and cannot be understood by meaning. One must take the forward step beyond the zero point of the intent of the classics and dharma-talks of prior illuminates to enact its power in oneself with nothing to hang on to in the midst of situations.

I don't really have any concept of dukka, for example!! heehee!!❤︎❤︎ I just do now.
