Pali Canon -- Shear Physical Size, and Shelf Space

Postby desert_woodworker on Mon Jan 23, 2017 2:25 pm

Many of us know that the Tripitaka, "The Three Baskets", or Pali Canon, is large, and extends to many volumes. It takes up a lot of shelf space, in any library. More than three baskets, I'd say.

Below is a photo of the assembled Pali Canon, in a library somewhere.

There have been a number of "synods" or assemblies over the centuries to determine (decide... ) which Buddhist writings are to be considered canonical, and which are not. A book on the synods is Amarnath Thakur, Buddha and Buddhist Synods In India and Abroad, 1996.

.

Just a little note to say that Pali Canon Suttas can be read at the Access to Insight and Sutta Central websites.

There's also a Pali Canon Sutta Studies forum (as well as a Zen sub-forum) at Buddhism Without Boundaries website.

D.,

Thanks!

It's great that the writings have been digitized (although I don't know whether or not yet all translated into Western languages). But, what do you suppose?: Do you suppose the entire canon would fit on one, say, 32 GB memory stick
(a "Pocket Tripitaka"!)?

Beautiful pic Joe thanks, I love antique/wood and especially with those books in it.

32GB should work easily I think, but I have like 50TB of external HDD's and flash drives so I could pretty much store anything ever written :tongueincheek: then again I can't really read anything on a pc, e-reader for more then 5 minutes, I need to have a physical book in my hands.

ps the Cosmic Consciousness book will arrive at the 31st of this month.

That's great! If you'd like to discuss it as you read it, or afterwards, we can start a thread about it.

Cosmic Consciousness?

Man, I am trying to stay conscious on this level and not being very successful.

So I go to basics: Heart Sutra and Genjokoan :) and there hope to settle down some. It helps.

The picture of that lovely cabinet and collection makes me just wanna sit and zone out. I guess that's alright though.

Good to read you two cosmic bozos. I do miss you.

Happy Trails,

Ed
