Supreme Court Ruling Makes Same-Sex Marriage a Right Nationw

Postby partofit22 on Sat Jun 27, 2015 4:33 am

WASHINGTON — In a long-sought victory for the gay rights movement, the Supreme Court ruled by a 5-to-4 vote on Friday that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage.

“No longer may this liberty be denied,” Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority in the historic decision. “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”

Marriage is a “keystone of our social order,” Justice Kennedy said, adding that the plaintiffs in the case were seeking “equal dignity in the eyes of the law.”

The decision, which was the culmination of decades of litigation and activism, set off jubilation and tearful embraces across the country, the first same-sex marriages in several states, and resistance — or at least stalling — in others. It came against the backdrop of fast-moving changes in public opinion, with polls indicating that most Americans now approve of the unions.

Well, no. State-recognition of certain privileged family assemblages has always been along certain lines of legal-definition. Now that definition (in U.S.A. ... ) has been changed by "five lawyers", according to Chief Justice Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court, in his powerful dissenting opinion in the recent case brought.

"Just saying", not taking a side.

There is no nastiness.

Nothing to do with freedom, any law is bondage, any law to withold people from same sex marriage or whatever,
that is "freedom" too!

You're "free" to practise zen, to make love, to make war, to chop of heads, it's all free! ;)

dualism is a personal projective illusive affair based on likes and dislikes, alike "healing the world"

True freedom is beyond such notions.

Just rejoice without making judgements.

There is no nastiness

Imposing one's will based around dogmatic morality involving individuals who do no harm is nastiness

This is why I detest religion

Just remember that I have lived and worked within some of the most fundamentalist religious societies on Earth

The injustice and lack of un-shackled compassion is nauseating

The state has no business in family or religion.... or medical freedom if you live in CA. We do not need the Supreme Court to tell us what is right and what is kind. Best we own the nastiness as a collective that took this to the supreme court. Nastiness is a rather kind word to describe this....

And, best we own the backlash that is sure to occur... racial animosity is rearing it's ugly head again 50+ years after the laws were put in place. Until the heart of man is healed. law is the poorest substitute.

if we look farther than the poster childeren or racism, same sex marriage, we will see the underbelly of suffering in many forms.. many of it state sponsored.... broken heated

I don't see the "diversity" in "same"-anything. Who could.

(just pretending to be a thorn in the side of apathy).

ps State has every right, if you want State recognition and privilege(s). Else, it's fine to keep it personal and private. But that's now been resolved by the slimmest margin, in U.S.A., by lawyers. For the time being. Just observing; I have no dog in this race. "Commentating" from my Caliche Lanai.

Adding my applause :)X

State has every right up to a point:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supremacy_Clause

The law worked as it should, and Federal cases showed where this was going long ago as several cases where states had banned same-sex marriages were overturned. So eventually it took the Supreme court's decision (alarming close, imo) for the final say.

Linda's words sound sweet to my ears, as usual.

Avisitor: "Strange that freedom has to be made into law??"
It's not that freedom was made into a law, but that it took the legal profession to point out to some who were trying to deny freedoms, that this wasn't according to our laws. But I'm not a lawyer. :)
