The Russian have erected a 30-ft. statue of Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK47 assault rifle. The statue was unveiled by his daughter.

The Clash:

Tommy Gun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFHEuKkTa5k

Lyrics

Tommy gun
You ain't happy less you got one
Tommy gun
Ain't gonna shoot the place up
Just for fun
Maybe he wants to die for the money
Maybe he wants to kill for his country
Whatever he wants, he's gonna get it!

Tommy gun
You better strip it down for a custom run
Tommy gun
Waiting in the airport 'till kingdom come
An' we can watch you make it
On the nine o'clock news
Standing there in Palestine lighting the fuse
Whatever you want, you're gonna get it

Tommy gun
You'll be dead when your war is won
Tommy gun
But did you have to gun down everyone?
I can see it's kill or be killed
A nation of destiny has got to be fulfilled
Whatever you want, you're gonna get it!

Tommy gun
You can be a hero in an age of none
Tommy gun
I'm cutting out your picture from page one
I'm gonna get a jacket just like yours
An' give my false support to your cause
Whatever you want, you're gonna get it!

Boats an' tanks and planes, it's your game
Kings an' queens an' generals learn your name
I see all the innocents, the human sacrifice
And if death comes so cheap
Then the same goes for life!

Yeah, I'll get back to "guns" in a second and a half, but here's Lou (the late Lou Reed)
telling a thing or two about his song "The Gun", and other things even earlier, as when
with The Velvet Underground, before he went solo.

Just a five minute spot. The audio, though, makes it sound as if Lou had "adenoids". Maybe
he did. But I think the interview was mic-ed poorly. Try to see if you can compensate.

Very creative visualization(s) done by some cartoonist!, to illustrate the audio. Very welcome.

Don't be antsy. It's slow to develop. But then, you have it.

Lou reed, from his "Blue Mask" solo record of 1982, his song, "The Gun". Lyrics below! --Joe

    The Gun -- Lou Reed

    The man has a gun
He knows how to use it
    Nine millimeter Browning
Let's see what he could do
He'll point it at your mouth
Says that he'll blow your brains out
    Don't you mess with me
    I'm carrying a gun
    Carrying a gun
    Carrying a gun
    Don't you mess with me
    I'm carrying a gun
    Carrying a gun
    Carrying a gun
    Don't mess with me
    Ummm-m, I'm carrying a gun
    Get over there
    Move slowly
I'll put a hole in your face
If you even breathe a word
Tell the lady to lie down
I want, ah, you to be sure to see this
I wouldn't want you to miss a second
    Watch your wife
    Carrying a gun
    Shooting with a gun
    Dirty animal

    Carrying a gun
    Carrying a gun
    Watch your face
    Carrying a gun
    Carrying a gun
    Carrying a gun
The animal dies with fear in his eyes
    With a gun
Don't touch him, don't touch him
Stay away from him, he's got a gun.

Well, another classic, deserving to be lodged in this thread, "The Best...", etc.

A political song. As if there was ever anything else from Lou Reed? And, a Music-Criticism song... .

This is, "The Original Wrapper", 1986, from his record, "Mistrial".

Some say Lou Reed was the original "rapper". Well, he was THE rapper. The rest of them imitators out there are just ...bullshit misogynist cop-killers. Well, says me. Yowza! :tongueincheek:

Lyrics on this one are worth looking-up if any are unclear.

This is the world's only pop-song in which the word "lugubrious" appears. --Joe

Skip,

Spike wrote:Jodisattva, you have the cultural sensitivity of a wet mop. Look in the mirror . . .

I think it's you who's been looking in the mirror, thanks.

If you're not here to sing the praises of "Lou", that's OK, and we're all ears to hear who you sing the praises of besides. This is a music thread.

But Lou beat-out all the whipper-snappers. He's been "rapping" since 1966. Granted, he calls it "singing", and was offended at first when some criticized his style. Days gone by, though... . And many trail-blazing miles. May Lou rest in peace.

On to better things! How about some music.

This becomes more than a music thread when black music is labeled "cop-killer" and "misogynistic". Your opinion is the opposite of Black Lives Matter. And you're probably not the last self-righteous jerk I will have kneed.

Fun, natural fun

I'm in heaven
With my boyfriend, my laughing boyfriend
There's no beginning and there is no end
Time isn't present in that dimension
You'll take my arm
When we're walkin', rolling and rocking
It is one time I'm glad I'm not a man
Feels like I'm dreaming, but I'm not sleeping

I'm in heaven

Dream on, Skip.

Did I mention "black"? No. You did. Knee-jerk... .

I mentioned imitators. Lou was the original.

But if you want to defend gangsters of all stripes, or no stripes, and their romanticizers and apologists, and feel you can justify it, that's your business. Not in this thread. Try the "Play" thread.

On to better things.

Let's hear what "bokki" just put up... .

Many a hand has scaled the grand old face of the plateau
Some belong to strangers, and some to folks you know
Holy ghosts and talk show hosts are planted in the sand
To beautify the foothills, and shake the many hands

Nothing on the top but a bucket and a mop
And an illustrated book about birds
You see a lot up there but don't be scared
Who needs action when you got words

When you've finished with the mop, then you can stop
And look at what you've done
The plateau's clean, no dirt to be seen
And the work, it was fun

Nothing on the top but a bucket and a mop
And an illustrated book about birds
You see a lot up there but don't be scared
Who needs action when you got words

Many hands began to scan around for the next plateau
Some said it was Greenland, and some say Mexico
Others decided it was nowhere except for where they stood
But those were all just guesses
Wouldn't help you if they could
