Here is the great viola da gamba virtuoso Jordi Savall, playing several pieces before an audience in Spain.

The gamba is a precursor of the violoncello (which I play as an amateur player).

I have never approached the viola da gamba myself. I'm happy with 4 strings (of the 'cello). But, oh, I admire the sound of the gamba. Its sound is a little more "ancient", but let's not kid ourselves: it's not very old, compared with some Eastern stringed instruments.

Much of the gamba repertoire can be "ported" to the 'cello... . ;)

Eric Dolphy – Bass clarinet
Nathan Davis – Tenor Sax
Donald Byrd – Trumpet
Jacques Dieval – Piano
Jacques B. Hess – Bass
Franco Manzecchi – Drums
Jacky Bambou – Percussion

This tune is recorded but few days before Eric Dolphy passed away.
It inspired this poem:

“SPRINGTIME,” A LAMENT ON THE DEATH OF ERIC DOLPHY

In Spring 1964, shortly before his death
Eric Dolphy closed his supposedly Last Date
with words: “when music is over, it’s gone in the air
you can never capture it again.” Can you dig it?

How do you mourn the master like Eric
open, warm, sober, and caring
who would share whatever little he had
with other who had even less?

Like the Ancient Buddha who says,
“When a person has compassion for all
Then only he is noble”. Can you dig it?

I listen, he still plays

out there, outward bound
serene bird trills
notes unlike our notes
sounds between our sounds
outside of our scales
breaking the time and space

Can you dig it?
I listen quietly
years pass

on a brisk Winter night I learn
one other side of Dolphy’s
was just discovered, the real final date
cut but few days before his death
a Spanish tune for the time of spring
and I see --

The sun lowers slowly
a matador proudly enters the ring
thousands of eyes upon him
ladies cover pale faces with fans
throw fresh flowers on pure yellow sand
some of the flowers white, some red

the gate swings wide open
the bull enters the arena
shadows deepen, fanfares blare
and Eric Dolphy drops
off his bass clarinet horn
a line the dead can hear

Can you dig it?

How did Eric Dolphy die?
The doctors let him slip into a diabetic coma
it’s just another junkie suffering an overdose

Some have cried out, “White men killed Eric!”
True, they were white and he was black
but the matter is not that black and white.
Rather there is always too much ignorance
And prejudice of all kinds in this world

But there is also time for life and time for death
and it is just like the Ancient Buddha said
that the truly awakened one knows well in advance
he is about to move on and is ready
and go in peace

on that Spring night
but days before his death
Eric knew and told us all

wailing weeping crying
we are dying, we are dying
we are all dying

then the winds come, ice breaks
fresh hues and colors burst through snow
and we are alive again
all completely reborn
and it is springtime
when the old masters blow

MOTORHEAD

"Brotherhood Of Man"

Now your time has come a storm of iron in the sky,
War and murder come again, lucky if you die.
No way to rescue destiny, scream and curse in vain,
You will never be remembered, no one knows your name.
When the music changes then all is broken down,
Mighty cities laid to ruin, burning to the ground.
Murder is become the law; you cannot make a stand,
Chaos rules the world now mortal, brotherhood of man.
You cannot hide the truth from me I know what's in your heart,
Greed and jealousy each equal, all your days now dark.
Mighty mountains fall in dust the world falls into hell,
Faith in lying prophets, no one to lift the spell.
Monsters rule your world are you too scared to understand?
You shall be forever judged and you shall surely hang,
We live and scrape in misery; we die by our own hand,
And still we murder our own/
