But if you want to defend gangsters of all stripes, or no stripes, and their romanticizers and apologists, and feel you can justify it, that's your business. Not in this thread. Try the "Play" thread.

? ..what would u like 2 say bout d play thread, Joe?
Let's hear what "bokki" just put up...

I find that that link does not work in (this part of) USA. Although the Web is Worldwide, it seems there are different URLs from place to place, from time to time.

But this one does work, here:

Thanks, I don't know these guys. Some interesting guitar-work! And good Spanish lyric translation titles... .

Oh, nothing. Posts there and elsewhere speak for themselves, I mean.

Already did that in abundance. Start here:

If Lou Reed calls it singing, not rapping, why can't you?

Lou Reed was indeed a trailblazing, white, glam-rocker. He deliberately eschewed pretty much all traces of R&B or Blues in his music in favor of avant-garde. All but several of his bandmates over his long career were white. He was a very weak vocalist with limited range. (Linton Kwesi Johnson, the great dub-reggae artist, had more influence as a precursor to rap.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1iHAPASZQ0

You said it, I didn't have to. To you, rap is not black through-and-through.

Quick: name the last *rap* song you paid attention to?

Well then, that must make it okay. No one to be mildly offended besides a few other blacks . . .

My apologies if I offended you, Spike-

What it makes it is a fact that a few band leaders used it -- which doesn't change its origin/history- I've used it from time to time not knowing its origin- I thought it fell into the category of exclamations similar to zowie, holy cow/crap, whoah and so forth- But now I know-

Possibly due to the exchange/s above, I've had Gin and Juice stuck in my head most of the day- Not Snoop's version but a cover of his original by The Gourds off their CD Shinebox-

Can music and lyrics truly ever be offensive?

Back to the basics.... here's a new version of my fav by Sachmo ... form and formless. I've not heard Toots before tonight.... I saw Sachmo (Louis Armstrong) in the Rainbow Room in NYC in the late 60's in a past life. I was completely confused by previous reference to Lou and Big Bands. There is only one Louis... he has many faces.

For those who may not Louis Armstrong (1901-1971) .... here's Louis singing. Unfortunately, most of the good clips have been taken down on utube....

Never made it to the Rainbow Room, but did enjoy CBGB's and the Mudd Club in their day. Met and talked with Tom Wolfe in the Algonquin where I was staying once (and Hamlet, the cat!). Last night watched the great Stevie Wonder at the Global Citizen Festival take a knee and play beautiful harmonica, so was glad to follow-up here with Toots. But Satchmo still owns that song.

Next week I will wear my Kaepernick jersey to work on Friday. White tees, as usual, 'til then. Bet stuff will happen on NFL sports games today.
