Travel Book Recommendations

Postby anka on Thu Aug 04, 2016 5:36 pm

Hello all,

I will be on travel for work next week, looking for a good book recommendation to help eat up time during travel and periods between work.

Good opportunity to dedicate extra time to zazen (and physical practice).

I agree - instead of escaping, just be a conscious part of it all.

However, if you like science fiction : Douglas Adams and Iain Banks (culture series) are musts.

In non-fiction : Steven Pinker and Jared Diamond are great reads.

Phillip Pullmans 'Golden Compass' fantasy series was also a great moment.

Since you asked in Zen Forum I guess you would appreciate Zen related recommendations. It won't kill time, but if you have the opportunity to read while traveling you might read "Passing Through the Gateless Gate: Koan Practice for Real Life" by Zen Forum contributor Guo Gu, which consists of very short chapters so you can read one per travel stage. If you need a shorter, lighter book to carry, "Great Doubt: Practicing Zen in the World" by Jeff Shore may fit the bill. There are thousands of others, but these are the two newest (and very good books) on my bookshelf so they come to mind readily!
